Over the past twenty years, the regeneration of mass housing has expanded, defining a new branch of architectural design. Many interventions, initially addressing specific cases, have become exemplary, enriching disciplinary knowledge. Yet, the most successful projects often remain isolated: a true scale-up – mass-regeneration – across the housing stock is still lacking. The recent European Directive (EU) 2024/1275 on building energy efficiency offers funding and incentives that could enable this transition.
This symposium brings together experts from research, practice, public administrations and industry to explore the challenge. Structured in three sessions, the symposium will: revisit the challenges of urban and architectural
regeneration; examine innovative climate-responsive design methods; and investigate adaptive prefabrication processes, including the potential of artificial intelligence.
